Salmon River volleyball takes first round of Class C tourney; Massena football advances to state playoffs

Salmon River won the first round of the Class C volleyball tournament, but then lost to Canton in the next round.

Their win was against Gouverneur on Tuesday, Nov. 2. They won by scores of 25-22, 25-20, 12-25 and 25-20.

Shelby Jock anchored the win with eight kills, 13 aces and 12 digs. Ava Bero added six digs, four aces and two kills. Joely Swamp tallied three digs, six kills and two aces.

The Shamrocks went on to play Canton in the next round, two nights later at the Roos House on the SUNY Canton campus. They lost 3 sets to zero. The scores were 25-10, 25-8 and 25-18. Faith Halladay had four service points. Katelyn Benham scored 14 service points and two kills. Ella Murtagh had three service points, four kills and an assist. Felicity Enstrom tallied two service points and two kills. Payton Benson notched a service point, two kills and an assist. Makenna Cameron and Sydney Cardinal fashioned one kill apiece.

The Massena Raiders took the Class B football championship on Friday, Nov. 5 on their home turf, Mike Nichols Field. They defeated Malone 41-0.

Massena reached the endzone once in the first quarter and built a 28-0 lead by halftime. Quarterback Dominic Monacelli made eight rushing attempts for 87 yards, including touchdown runs of one yard and 35 yards. He went 4/8 passing for 82 yards and threw one interception.

Nolan Goolden made 11 carries for 58 yards, including touchdown runs from four and six yards out, respectively.

Deshawn Walton scored a touchdown on a 62-yard punt return and caught a pass that ended in a 58-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. He ended the game with three catches and 72 yards gained. Noah Park made five out of six PAT kicks.

On defense, Aaron Binion made a sack and recovered a fumble. Brian Hurlbut intercepted the ball once, and Ethan Donnelly logged a sack.

Massena advances to play Section 7 champs Peru in the opening round of state playoffs at St. Lawrence Central.
