A Voice from the Eastern Door
AKWESASNE. The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe (SRMT) is reminding tribal members that the public comment period for two (2) tribal regulations is still open. Both regulations are accessible on the Tribal Members Portal for written comments to be provided before their respective deadlines.
The SRMT Hemp Production Regulations was amended following feedback from the United States Department of Agriculture, while the SRMT Business Organizations Ordinance was recently developed to help tribal members form “for-profit” and “non-profit” organizations.
The deadline to submit written comments for the Amended Hemp Production Regulations is Sunday, November 21st; while feedback on the Business Organizations Ordinance must be provided by Friday, November 26th. A virtual informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 10th at 5:00 p.m. to share the hemp regulation amendments. No meeting will be held to discuss the business ordinance due to the unavailability of presenters.
Along with the Tribal Members Portal, a copy of either tribal regulation is available upon request from the Tribal Clerk’s Office, Office of the General Counsel, or the main reception desk at the Ionkwakiohkwaronon Tribal Administration Building.
Comments can be submitted in writing, or during the informational meeting, and must be received by the Tribal Clerk’s Office by their respective deadlines. Written comments can be emailed to [email protected] or mailed/dropped off to:
Office of the Tribal Clerk
Ionkwakiohkwaroron Tribal Administration Building
71 Margaret Terrance Memorial Way
Akwesasne, New York 13655
Once the comments have been reviewed, the final version of the tribal ordinances will be posted once more for tribal members to review. After that period has closed, the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council shall sign the regulations into law by tribal council resolutions.
For more information, please contact the SRMT Office of the General Counsel at (518) 358-2272.
