A Voice from the Eastern Door
The Salmon River Shamrocks volleyball squadron took a moment to applaud their four graduating senior members before starting their Monday, Oct. 24 home game against Malone.
The four members are Lila Mitchell, Ryanna Bero, Savannah Swamp and Katsitsi:io Mitchell.
Lila Mitchell is in her third year of varsity volleyball at Salmon. She is a utility player, specializing in middle back. She plans to study human biology in college. She said her favorite volleyball memory is defeating Massena while they were headed by Salmon River's former coach, Nicole Deshaies. The Shamrocks are now coached by Hayden Beaulieu and Marci Silver.
"Lila is a competitive player and someone we can always turn to to turn up the heat," Coach Silver said at the recognition.
Bero is also in her third year on the team. She plays an important role as the team's setter, the coaches said. She plans to go to college and study either human services or criminal justice. Her favorite team memory is beating Brushton-Moira, while down three starters including herself. She said the team was still able to continue a winning streak, despite the short roster.
"She also loves when the coaches lose their minds when we make a mistake during the game," Coach Silver said. "Ryanna has pushed herself so hard this year and is always willing to go the extra mile."
Swamp, a team captain, is a third-year player who plays the outside hitter position. She plans to attend college and study criminal justice. She also said her favorite team memory is beating Coach Deshaies in Massena this year.
"Savannah is a true leader who has continued to keep our team together this year. Her kind words and wisdom will be missed next year," Coach Silver said.
Not able to join the ceremony is Katsitsi:io Mitchell. She is a first-year player who has "emerged as one of our leading defensive middle backs this year," the coach said. She plans to study a veterinary tech program in college. Her favorite team memory is "hanging out before games warming up, and laughing."
"Tayah has shown tremendous growth this year," Coach Silver said.
The girls soccer team also recently recognized four of their players.
Mckenna Laughing (#2) was awarded Second Team All Northern honors.
Hayden Clark (#10) and Lindsay Martin (#14) were named Athletes of Distinction.
