A Voice from the Eastern Door
Massena and Salmon River recently met up in girls soccer and volleyball, with the Raiders taking the soccer game and the volleyball tilt going to the 'Rocks.
Here are summaries of those contests, and others played in recent days:
Friday, Oct. 22, volleyball – The Raiders narrowly lost to the Franklin Academy Huskies 3-2 Massena took sets one and four, 25-23 and 25-22, respectively. Malone won the other three sets 25-13, 25-20 and 25-12. For the Raiders, Katelyn Benham sparked the offense with 16 assists, four kills, four service points and two aces. Ella Murtagh tallied 14 service points,3 three aces and two kills. Felicity Engstrom had five service points, two assists and three kills. Makenna Cameron posted six service points, two aces, an assist and seven kills. Payton Benson had three assists, five kills and two aces. Faith Halladay ended with three kills and four service points. Sydney Cardinal had a kill with service points. Keely Bova scored two service points.
Thursday, Oct. 21, boys soccer – Salmon River defeated Malone 5-2 at home. Chase Lewis scored four goals. Kade Cook scored one goal and helped set up another. Caleb Hall and Cameron Perras scored for Malone (3-12, 3-9).
Thursday, Oct. 21, boys soccer – Massena fell to Ogdensburg 4-0. Holden Woods, Syrus Glad, Trent Lovely and Alex Mitchell scored. Tuesday, Oct. 19, boys soccer – Massena and Salmon River played to a 2-2 tie. Kade Cook and Evan College scored for the 'Rocks. Chris Marasco scored both goals for the Raiders.
Wednesday, Oct. 20, volleyball – Massena easily beat Brushton-Moira 3-0 by scores of 25-9, 25-8 and 25-9. Faith Halladay posted 10 service points, an ace and a kill. Felicity Engstrom scored nine service points, two aces and one kill. Payton Benson tallied 13 service points, three aces, a pair of assists and a solo kill. Katelyn Benham notched seven each in service points, aces and assists, also eight kills. Makenna Cameron posted seven service points, two aces, three assists and three kills. Sydney Cardinal scored three service points with two assists and three kills. Mya McSurdy scored a service point. Ava LaRue made an assist.
Wednesday, Oct. 20, girls soccer – Salmon River fell to Malone 2-0. Mia Leroux made nine saves in the Shamrocks net. Hillary Baker scored both goals, the first at 39:11 in the second half from Cameron Stone, the other at 19:21 in the second from Claire Poupore. Gina Norcross made seven saves. "We honored our four seniors during our contest this evening: Mckenna Laughing. Hayden Clark, Lindsay Martin and Mia Leroux," SRC Coach Elizabeth Durfee said.
Monday, Oct. 18, girls soccer – Massena shut out Salmon River 5-0. SRC goalkeeper Mia Leroux stood tall in their net with 14 saves. Brooke Terry scored once and assisted once for Massena.
Monday, Oct. 18 volleyball – Massena claimed a 3-1 win over Tupper Lake. They took the first, third and fourth sets 25-23, 28-26 and 25-18. Set two went to the Lumberjacks, 25-18. For Massena, Katelyn Benham paced the offense with 12 service points, two aces, 15 assists and a kill. Faith Halladay had 10 service points, three aces and three kills. Sydney Cardinal had six service points, three kills and an assist. Felicity Engstrom scored seven service points with a kill and two blocks. Makenna Cameron scored four service points with eight kills. Payton Benson scored five service points with two kills.
Friday, Oct. 15, boys soccer – Salmon River shut out the Sandstoners 2-0 for a home field win. Kade Cook assisted both goals, which came off the feet of Chase Lewis and Evan Collette.
Friday, Oct. 15, volleyball – Massena played to a 3-1 loss to Chateaugay, winning the third set 27-25. The Bulldogs took the other three 26-24, 25-16 and 25-12. Faith Halladay had 12 service points, an ace, two assists and a kill. Ella Murtagh had seven service points and nine kills. Felicity Engstrom scored five service points, two aces and six kills. Payton Benson tallied six service points and two kills. Katelyn Benham had 19 assists, three kills, one ace and two service points. Sydney Cardinal notched three kills and a service point.
Friday, Oct. 15, football – Massena defeated Canton 40-14 at home. DeShawn Walton caught six passes for 184 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Raiders. Quarterback Dominic Monacelli went 8-16 passing for 214 yards with one interception. He rushed six times, with nice gains of 69 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Chris Kucipak intercepted the ball once and scored a Massena touchdown.
Thursday, Oct. 14, girls soccer – Salmon River fell to Potsdam 2-0. Danielle Emerson scored both goals. Mia Leroux made six saves for SRC. Lola Buckley made four saves for Potsdam.
Wednesday, Oct. 13, volleyball – Salmon River blanked the Raiders, 25-21, 25-7 and 25-17. "Salmon River played extremely well tonight and hustled for every point. I'm very proud of them! We just couldn't pull it together on serve receive and made too many errors," Massena Coach Nichole Deshaies said. From her team, Faith Halladay had four service points. Payton Benson scored three service points. Sydney Cardinal had a pair of kills and one block. Makenna Cameron made two kills.
Wednesday, Oct. 13, boys soccer -- Kade Cook scored in the 77th minute to lead the 'Rocks to a 2-1 win over Ogdensburg.The Blue Devils scored their only goal in the 59th minute. Salmon River tied the game with a goal from Evan Collette, with an assist from Cook, in the 75th minute.
Wednesday, Oct. 13, boys soccer – Massena took a blowout 9-0 win over Gouverneur. Thomas Eggleston and Marcus Firnstein both scored twice for the Raiders. Ty Lucey, Connor Terry, Ryan Letham, Seth Collins and Jaden Brownell also scored. Goaltender Jacob Smutz made six saves.
Tuesday, Oct. 12, volleyball – Massena lost to Canton 3-0 by scores of 25-15, 25-9 and 25-19. For the Raiders, Katelyn Benham scored seven service points with six assists. Makenna Cameron had four service points. Faith Halladay had three service points and one kill. Sydney Cardinal scored three service points with one kill and also tallied one block. Felicity Engstrom notched two service points and two kills. Ella Murtagh had one service point and two kills. Payton Benson scored a service point and made two assists.
Monday, Oct. 11, boys soccer – Ethan Moulton made five saves in the Salmon River net, but the Shamrocks ended up suffering a 3-0 loss to Westhill in a game played in Syracuse.
