A Voice from the Eastern Door
Race Pro Weekly interviewed Carey Terrance on Saturday at Super Dirt Week in Oswego. Asking Terrance, the meaning of his 'Every Child Matter' logo on his race care, 'Fast Eddie' spoke to the driver of 66 and the 358 mods and the big block modifieds on what it all means.
Eddie, "Carey, taking a look at the rear quarter panel you got 'Every Child Matters", could you explain to the race fans what that is?"
Terrance, "Yeah, that's to raise awareness and commemorate the victims and survivors of the residential school situation that happened within Canada and the U.S. So, we're trying to bring awareness to that. This happened to a lot of First Nations and the [attempted] assimilation of the First Nations people and residential schools in the early 1900s."
Fast Eddie, "I see on September 30th in Canada, they actually have the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, it's also known as Orange Shirt day. What do you want the people to take from this and how important is this to you and your ancestors?
Carey stated, "I mean it's important to all our people. It was a big impact on a lot of people's lives within First Nations, my grandparents and I mean a lot of grandparents – all around First Nations communities and throughout Canada and the U.S. So, I mean it's to show and raise awareness to this situation that happened and again, to commemorate those survivors and victims of this.
Fast Eddie, "And I know just from doing the research I've been able to do, you know they found thousands of bodies in unmarked graves, some of these kids suffered abuse and maltreatment, and some of the families were never even told what happened to these children. So, this is a pretty important thing that now is a national holiday in Canada."
Carey, "Yeah, it's big and it means people are still suffering from it. We see this every day in our communities. There's a lot of history behind us and hopefully it raises awareness to this situation that happened, so nothing like this can happen again. Obviously, but just to recognize those survivors of this and honor them."
