Massena volleyball edges TL, B-M; Shamrocks down OFA in boys soccer

In Massena and Salmon River recent varsity sports action, the Raiders volleyball contingent swept Tupper Lake and Brushton-Moira. However, Malone proved a tougher opponent for Massena, while Salmon River also played a difficult game with the Huskies. Massena’s gridmen defeated Malone, and in soccer, the Raiders and Shamrocks claimed wins over Gouverneur and OFA, respectively.

• Friday, Sept. 17, girls soccer, Massena 2, Gouverneur 0: Bella Cromie was a stalwart in the Raiders net with 10 saves. Jeanelle Burke and Auna Shadle scored the two goals.

• Friday, Sept 17, football, Massena 14, Malone 6: Massena quarterback Dominic Monacelli scored a touchdown on a 46-yard run. He also caught one inteception. He rushed for a total of 148 yards and gained 102 on passes. Malone quarterback Jeremiah Scharf suffered an injury in the second half and was unable to finish the game. Massena scored first on a 32-yard pass from Monacelli to Noah Park, followed by Park nailing a PAT kick. Malone’s touchdown came with 39.4 seconds left in the half. Logan Peck intercepted a pass on the Raiders 29 and ran it into the

endzone. They then failed a two-point conversion pass.

• Friday, Sept 17, volleyball, Massena 0, Malone 3: The Huskies swept the Raiders in three sets, the scores of which were 25-19, 25-19 and 25-14. Katelyn Benham led the Massena offense with 13 service points and assists. Faith Halladay tallied 10 service points. Ella Murtagh posted five kills and 10 service points.

• Friday, Sept. 17, girls soccer, Salmon River 0, Ogdensburg 3: Mia Leroux had an 11-save game in the Salmon River net. “We didn’t have a great start and that seemed to set the tone for the first half. However, the girls responded with great intensity in the second half to keep OFA off the board and gave us a few quality opportunities on goal,” said Salmon River Coach Liz Durfee. All scoring was in the second half. Azlyn Richardson scored for OFA from Ella O’Neil with 38:44 on the clock. Hannah Costello scored unassisted at 4:56. Azlyn Richardson scored from Brinley Fredericks with 2:42 remaining. Olivia Merrill posted six saves for OFA.

• Thursday, Sept. 16, boys soccer, Salmon River 1, Ogensburg 0: Rick Chatland coverted a pass from Evan Collette in the 70th minute into what would hold up as the game-winning goal. Ethan Moulton made seven saves to earn the shutout win for the Shamrocks. OFA goalie Rick Miller turned aside 11 shots.

• Wednesday, Sept. 15, volleyball, Massena 3, Tupper Lake 0: The Raiders took the win by scores of 25-21, 25-18 and 26-24. Shelby Jock led the Shamrocks with 15 kills, three aces and six digs. Ava Bero recorded 10 kills and three aces. Ava Mitchell came through with six kills and four digs. Ryanna Bero had a big game with 32 assists, three kills and three aces.

• Tuesday, Sept. 14, volleyball, Massena 3, Brushton-Moira 0: The Raiders swept the contest in three sets, 25-15, 25-10 and 25-16. Katelyn Benham tallied eight service points, seven assists and one kill. Faith Halladay scored seven service points. Felicity Engstrom produced four kills and two service points. The same evening, Massena’s modified team won 2-0 over B-M.

• Tuesday, Sept 14, cross country: Salmon River competed against Brushton-Moira, with Gayle Lazore taking the boys race and teammate Gunnar Mitchell finishing second. That same day, Massena fell to Malone 40-21, and lost by one point to Tupper Lake 28-27. In girls matches, Massena beat Tupper Lake but lost to Malone 35-20 and to Gouverneur 40-16.
