A Voice from the Eastern Door

Akwesasne Freedom School's Two Days of Excitment

The weekend was consumed with hot weather, a quilt auction, fine food and great entertainment at the Akwesasne Freedom School Annual Dinner and Quilt Auction this year. After a hiatus due to the pandemic last year, everyone was eager to get out and enjoy each other's company in the safety of an outdoor event.

AFS received 50 quilts and 1 pair of handmade beaded mukluks to auction off. The total for the quilt auction was just over $84 thousand dollars and almost half has already been paid in full. From other events and food sales made during the weekend the total amount made may be over $100 thousand dollars between the quilts, survival race, virtual race, online auction, Redrum Bike Run, and the concession and dinners sales. THE AFS also received a number of large cash donations over the weekend.

From the honorary Smoke Dance competition to celebrate Judy Swamp's birthday and the many Redrum Motorcycle members who participated in the AFS Annual Bike Run, AFS could possibly top over $120 thousand dollars - but a grand total hasn't been tallied yet. This would be, by far, the largest amount made at an annual dinner.
