The Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club Celebrates 20 years of Service

By Mahlon Smoke

Since opening in 2001, the Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club has provided children and teens a safe environment to play, learn, grow, and inspired generations of children to "realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring community members" as it says on the website. Within these last 20 years the Boys and Girls Club, has expanded to 5 clubhouses, new programs dedicated to feeding children through the summer, and in the coming years, will put into motion the Capital Project; a project dedicated to building a new ABGC facility to better accommodate the hundreds of students who come to the clubhouse after school, promising new jobs, expanded teen space, an added art-space, and so much more.

Jessica Cree-Jock, the Executive Director, who has been with the program for the last ten years, is proud of the accomplishments the club has done, especially the continued support of the community.

"I really felt the love from Akwesasne that day during the latest fundraiser" said Cree-Jock. Fundraisers are an important part of keeping the Clubhouse running and funding the many programs they provide.

At the moment, they want to focus on various small fundraisers throughout the summer, with a larger one held Memorial Day weekend. Then in the Fall, to host a large commemorative anniversary on October 1st. While there are no plans for what they are going to do. The staff and volunteers are going to focus on the summer programs and the children who attend the Boys and Girls Club.

Cree-Jock sent out a personal thank you to all the staff of the Boys and Girls Club for their hard work. All of whom provide guidance, care and safety to all the children and teens who attend the Boys and Girls Club.

She said, "I would like to thank all of the ABGC staff that work so hard to provide our programs and services and our volunteer board who work so hard advocating for our organizations!
