Onkwe Works on 2021 Gardening Season

Onkwe members have been busy this spring planting and transplanting strawberries, tomatoes and more. On May 19 they transplanted tomatoes into the garden and continued the next day. In fact, on any given day, you will see dedicated Onkwe members tending to the large garden located at Tsionkwanatiio.

On May 16th they held a giveaway at Tsionkwanatiio handing out blueberry bushes, high bush cranberry trees, wild rose bushes, goji berry, black berries and currant plants to local gardeners.

Niawen to Root to Heaven for making this event possible.

Earlier in May, they planted over 500 strawberry plants under encouraging words of Wolf Clan Chief Ernest David. Young and old planted the precious berry plants that were given to us from the Sky Woman.

All work Onkwe families do in the garden (plowing, planting, watering, weeding, harvesting, presentations, grounds maintenance, grant writing) is done on a volunteer basis and can sometimes be difficult to manage between our jobs and families. It is their hope to 'bring our community together to share these foods with each other and in turn create a healthier Akwesasne. The food is free for the community at harvest time and we only hope to share our journey with you.'

All Akwesasronon are welcome to join in their gardening, tending and harvesting activities.
