A Voice from the Eastern Door

O Mother Earth

YEARS AGO

THEY SAID:

"Vast acres of land must

be stripped for oil."

THEY SAID:

"Great forests of trees

must be felled to make room

for the growing population,

and to make room for more

roads, industries, parks, golf

courses, country clubs and

houses."

THEY SAID:

"Another country wanted

all the timber it could get."

They said:

"They would plant stands

of seedlings (to replace the

trees removed), and give them

forty years to grow - large

enough to out again."

THEY SAID:

"The poisons used were

not as detrimental to humans

or to animals, nor to the

environment, as many people

believed."

THEY SAID:

"Nature would take care

of radioactive wastes, and

other poisons such as

mercury, lead and others.

They would bury them." Bury

them in you.

THEY SAID:

"There were too many wild animals, and not enough food. They would only die anyway - so, have a good time sportmen."

NOW

THEY SAY:

"It will take billions and

billions of dollars to even

partially clean up the

horrendous mess human-kind

has caused."

THEY SAY:

"Eat fish not more than

twice a month, or eat fish at

your own risk."

THEY SAY:

"There are now many

endangered species of animals

and birds in the world today,

due to oil spills, acid and

other poisons, along with the

loss of their habitat, and also,

the loss by poachers."

THEY SAY:

"People of the Rain

Forests, and other countries

have died and are dying

because their way of life has

been denied them, and

because they are being

subjected to starvation and

disease."

THEY SAY:

"The rain forests are fast

Becoming extinct."

They say: "Something must be done

about the terrible waste;

something must be done about

the contamination of air, water

and soil." But will they do, I

something?

THEY SAY:

"Perhaps years ago,

people (meaning the invaders

from other countries), should

have listened, and should have

heeded the First Natives of

this country, when they were

told by them what would

happen if they did not respect

and care for the land -- .

Mother Earth."
