A Voice from the Eastern Door

Mary Richardson

It is with great sadness to inform friends of Mary Richardson 90, a resident of the St. Johnsville, NY area, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 30, 2020 at the St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Mary was a long-time friend of the Kanatsiohareke Mohawk community, where she volunteered her time helping out with many activities held at the community. She was born on February 28, 1930 in New York, NY the daughter of Allen and Grace Richardson. Tom and friends met Mary in the 1990's at various fundraisers, workshops, performances in NYC, etc. Mary would always show up to lend whatever help she could. She was incredibly kind and helpful. She was very intelligent, knowledgeable of the world and a very book smart scholar of native history and more. Soon after meeting her, she moved from her apartment in NYC to Fort Plain (4 miles from Kanatsiohareke). She was such a quiet person who attended nearly every event held at the community. She also became a supporter of the Akwesasne Freedom School and attended several Annual Dinner, Quilt Auctions and Survival Races, where she would always lend a hand where she could. Mary is being cremated and will be laid to rest at the place she loved, Kanatsiohareke.
