A Voice from the Eastern Door

Despite the pandemic, Halloween was still celebrated in Akwesasne, in a slightly different form. This year trick or treaters were asked to stay in their vehicles as they drove down Margaret Terrance Memorial Way and waved to all the colorful costumed program staff and businesses who dressed up for the occasion. At the end of the trail waited Ronthahiiostha:ke - Alcohol/Chemical Dependency Prevention clubhouse, where trick or treaters received bags of Halloween candy that was donated by participating programs and businesses for this event.
"It was planned by the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment just to set up all the ideas. Each program from the Coalition is sponsoring a table throughout the event, said Megan Bushey, the prevention coordinator of the ACDP program.
Along with Chanel Cook ACDP prevention education supervisor, they greeted trick or treaters and explained the rules to them; to drive slow, take pictures if they want, and that their bags of candy will be waiting for each child at the end of the trail. While still different from the more traditional walkthrough, that didn't stop any of the tables from going all out, from Zombie Hollywood to the Power Rangers, and so much more.
"It's amazing, everyone always goes all out. There's lights, there's dancing and music, people are excited, and kids are excited, and everyone's dressed up!" said Bushey in regard to all the tables and costumes she'd seen from the different businesses and programs.
"It's just something positive for the community to look forward to." Bushey said.
This event gave families a safe alternative to trick or treating this year. Bushey went on to thank everyone who participated and donated candy to the event, which totaled to 750 bags of treats and who took the time to craft costumes and creative tables. Bushey also thanked CKON and the Akwesasne Police Department for providing music for the event.
While this year's Trunk and Treat will remain unique due to circumstances, nonetheless it allowed for children to enjoy Halloween in a safe and creative manner.
