A Voice from the Eastern Door
By Tom Sakokwenonkwas Porter - Bear Clan
I was on my way to a worldwide environmental conference in Toronto, Ontario , Canada. As I was driving on the thruway approaching Rochester, NY something strange was happening. I was listening to the radio & I thought that I was losing the signal as the music at intervals was being lost. Then, all of a sudden, a women’s voice began to speak in the Mohawk Language. I thought it was the radio, but I shut the radio off and the woman continued to talk.
Here is what she said, “You have been asking yourself why you were invited to the conference in Toronto.”
It was true because I am not an environmentalist or had no training to be at the conference.
She said, “That is the reason I am talking to you now. I am your Mother and I am the Mother of all living things. Almost all of my children have forgotten who I am, and I am lonesome for them. When you get to Toronto and they ask you to speak, you will tell them what I am telling you.”
She said, “There are two days of each year that the day and the night are equal, half day and half night. On these two days of each year (toka satontahton) if you are willing; can you and your family and your children come together either at your place or one of your children’s place in Akwesasne. Your family will prepare a meal and you all will eat together then you & your wife will tell your family (children – grandchildren) who I am, their Mother Earth. You will make sure they know me and why I am their Mother. You will begin this event at Sunrise and conclude at Sundown. You must make sure you don’t order (demand) your family to do this. You will invite them only if they desire or wish to be a part of it. Don’t pressure or make them feel guilty if they don’t want to observe; only if they so desire.”
Mother Earth said, “When you begin at sunrise on this day, don’t drive a car – I know you have a John Deere tractor and don’t run your tractor. You and family can ride or paddle your canoe. You and family can hike in the woods, in the big woods where you live, you can ride a bike. Anything that has a motor and uses petrol or gas don’t touch till after sundown.”
This was her message. Now I was on a phone conference with women, traditional spiritual people and they said that tobacco burning, or the equivalent should begin that sacred day. Then at sundown another tobacco burning to close that great day.
