"KAREN"

According to Wikipedia; Karen is a term for a person perceived to be entitled or demanding beyond the scope of what is considered appropriate or necessary. A common stereotype is that of an American middle-aged white woman who displays aggressive behavior when prevented from getting her way; such women are often depicted as demanding to “speak to the manager”, and of having a particular bob cut hairstyle. The term Karen is similar in some ways to the term Becky, in that it describes a racist white woman, but the Karen type is more than merely privileged, arrogant, and dismissive of people of color[citation needed]; she is also portrayed as verbally or physically abusive.

‘Karen’ has been showing up all over, in videos, articles across media, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. For all of her attention she’s receiving, she doesn’t seem to be going away.

On August 9, 2014, six summers ago, Michael Brown was shot and killed by a Ferguson, Missouri police officer thereby launching the Black Lives Matter movement. Now, as video evidence of abuses of power pile up amid a pandemic that has disproportionately killed minorities, the sense that black and brown and red lives still don’t matter is hard to shake.

On Monday, May 25, 2020, an unarmed black man in Minneapolis named George Floyd was brutally murdered by a police officer, catalyzing a new wave of protests against racist police violence in cities across the country. On that very same day, a white woman who was walking her dog in Central Park called 9-1-1 on a black man who was birdwatching in the same part of the park. The incident was caught on camera, and the video went viral; by the end of the day, the woman had lost her job and her dog and had been dubbed a “Karen.”
