Saturday May 2nd was the long-awaited Annual Seed Giveaway, hosted by Akwesasne's Task Force on the Environment.
"Due to Covid-19, ATFE will change our plans to giveaway seeds to the Akwesasne community. Starting Thursday, April 23rd, 2020 to Friday, May 1st, 2020, we will take orders for seeds over the phone. We will then bundle the seeds packages together for you. On Saturday, May 2nd, 2020, you may pick up your bundle of seeds at former IGA building from 9:00 am 12:00 pm." read a Facebook post, updating the community on changes to Akwesasne's Task Force on the Environments Annual Seed Giveaway.
Community members were given a list of seeds being distributed during the seed giveaway. With seeds such as red seed potatoes, white seed potatoes, yellow beans, kidney beans, field pumpkin, baby pam pumpkin, sweet corn traditional blue corn, slicing cucumbers, sweet peas, snow peas, onion sets, beets, carrots, spinach, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, turnips, arugula, Chinese and mustard kale; community members did not waste anytime calling in to place their orders.
The seed giveaway went as planned. The weather was beautiful, making it enjoyable for the hard-working volunteers and employees who were systematically handing out seed orders. Community members were leaving the seed giveaway with smiles on their faces; hopeful that next year's seed giveaway can include small talk and visits with old friends, just like it used to be.
