A Voice from the Eastern Door

Sirens of Solidarity for Local Healthcare Workers

By: Jaclyn Hall

On Monday, April 27th local first responders from throughout Akwesasne joined forces for one specific reason: unity was the spirit of the day as the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance, Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Police Service and the Hogansburg Akwesasne Volunteer Fire Department all showed their solidarity for our local frontline healthcare workers.

"Today, local first responders will be travelling to several locations in Akwesasne to help show support to our hardworking frontline healthcare workers on both sides of Akwesasne. Lights and sirens will be activated to show our appreciation and gratitude to our healthcare workers, who are working tirelessly during this pandemic," stated Norman King, Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service's Community Service Officer.

Beginning their long journey throughout the territory of Akwesasne, our local first responders began their trek, departing from Fire Station #1 in Hogansburg, at approximately 1:30. Heading first to Iakhihsohtha Lodge in Tsi Snaihne. Afterwards, the caravan of local first responders went onto the Kanonhkwatseriio Healthcare Facility in Kana:takon, before heading over to Kawehno:ke to greet the elders and staff at Tsiionkwanonhsote before heading up west to show their support to the Kawehno:ke Medical Clinic. Last but not least, local first responders made sure to include the Saint Regis Mohawk Health Services, where they were greeted with signs and plenty of gratitude being reciprocated.

During these difficult times, the community of Akwesasne has pulled together. There is a strong spirit of unity and perseverance in the people of Akwesasne and there is no denying that. The actions of our local first responders have lifted up the minds and hearts of not only our local healthcare workers, but also the elders and community members who are cared for daily by Akwesasne's finest.
