Massena and Salmon River's boys varsity hockey teams ended their regular 2019-2020 seasons on positive notes, and the Shamrocks are slated to play in Section 10 Division II quarterfinals.
They were to have hosted Thousand Islands in the quarterfinal round at Tom Cavanaugh Arena in Fort Covington on Tuesday, Feb. 25. The winner of that game will advance to play Ogdensburg in the semi-final round on Thursday, Feb. 27.
The Raiders have a bye and will face either Potsdam or Canton in the Section 10 championship game at Cheel Arena on the Clarkson University campus in Potsdam on Monday, March 2 with the at 8 p.m.
The Shamrocks closed out their regular season at home on Wednesday, Feb. 19 with a 3-0 win over Canton.
"Very proud of our kids this year. We have some older guys but we have a whole lot of youth and inexperience as well. Tonight, they played a complete game. We look forward to the playoffs," Coach Tim Cook Sr. said after the game.
Cobie Cree scored the only goal Salmon River would need at 13:03 in the first period, with a helper credited to Tim Cook Jr. At 14:33 in the second period, Cook Jr. fired in the first insurance marker with assists from Jared Showen and Alex Oakes. Showen punched in the final goal in the third period on an unassisted play.
Salmon River goalie Ryan Oakes made 20 saves. Canton netminder Hayden Todd turned aside 27 shots.
The Massena Raiders closed out their season on Friday, Feb. 21 on their home ice at Massena Arena with a 5-2 win over Ithaca.
Massena fashioned all the goals they would need in the first period. Nicholas Linstad opened scoring at 5:37 with assists from Nicholas Morrell and Connor Terry. Six minutes later, Morrell scored the second Massena goal on a play set up by Linstad. Those goals were sandwiched around the first of two Ithaca goals, this one from Zach Neely with assists from Colden Goodrow and Thomas Kopelson at 8:33. Morrell connected for what would hold up as the game-winner with less than a minute left in the first period, assisted by Garrett Engstrom.
The teams traded goals in the middle stanza. Linstad scored his second goal of the game at 4:48 on a play set up by Morrell and Patrick Barclay. Kopelson scored the final Ithaca marker at 9:19 with a helper coming from Colin Blakeslee.
Morrell scored the last goal of the game, and Massena's second insurance point, with 29 seconds left in regulation on an unassisted play.
Massena dominated in shots on goal, outshooting Ithaca 10-5 in the first period, 11-6 in the second and 11-1 in the third.
Two nights earlier, Massena lost 4-1 to the Norwood-Norfolk Icemen. It still led to both teams earning spots in divisional titles.
Mikey Kuhn connected for the lone Massena marker. John McCall paced N-N with a goal and two assists. Jayden Grant, Brody VanBuren and Bobby Voss picked up the other goals.
On Monday, Feb. 17, Salmon River lost 4-3 to the Franklin Academy Huskies. The Shamrocks started strong, punching in the opening goal and then getting out to a 3-1 lead after the first period.
Malone scored their second goal early in the middle stanza, and then later in the period tied the tilt 3-all. Adam Fakir scored the game-winner in the third period.
Tim Cook Jr. scored the opening goal on an unassisted play 3:05 into the first period. Mitchell Miletich scored the first FA goal a little over four minutes later, assisted by Seth Lockwood. Alex Oakes scored for SRC at 9:34, assisted by Connor Lewis, followed by Jared Showen at 12:49. Connor Dishaw and Ethan Moulton assisted Showen. Ryan Oakes made 18 saves in the Salmon River net.
