A Voice from the Eastern Door

15th year of Wayne Castor Fan Appreciation Award

Each year the Wayne Castor Fan Appreciation Award is presented to a fan who best represents Wayne Castor himself; good sportsmanship comes first, loaded with team spirit, add in being dependable and top it off with an unswerving commitment to the kids. If you knew Wayne Castor, that was how he was; a good person, dependable, and unswerving in his commitment to his family, his boys and to any kid who was lucky enough to have been in his life.

This year's Wayne Castor Fan Appreciation award was presented to Brian White, a long-time employee of Salmon River. White graduated from Salmon and knows the students and staff well. He was always there to help out in any way he could, whether it was helping the hockey team, soccer team or a student who just needed to be heard. White also works closely with the Shamrocks Hall of Fame.

According to Bill Plante, former hockey coach with the most State Championships ever won, "Brian White is well deserving of this award through his commitment and dedication to Salmon River students and sports".

Wayne Castor loved to watch his children, his nieces and nephews play sports at Salmon River and throughout the North Country. In 2017, Castor's sons, Peter and Kevin, sadly added the name of their mother, Elaine to the award. Elaine passed after a brief illness in 2016.

The Wayne and Elaine Castor Fan Appreciation award is sponsored by the "Kerry Kane Memorial Fund" from Kahnawake. Kerry Kane, Ken Kane's brother passed away in a high steel accident years ago. Ken Kane, along with former SRCS hockey coach Bill Plante present the Wayne and Elaine Castor Fan Appreciation Award each year to honor Kerry Kane and Wayne and Elaine Castor. Ken Kane knew Wayne Castor well, having his son Logan reside with the Castor Family during Logan's high school years.

Kane stated, "Wayne set the bar high, he tried his best to attend as many athletic functions possible. He did not shy away from any road trips and/or away games. Supporting raffles was never a question. Wayne was a strong believer that academics and sport combined, help to develop our students, preparing them for adulthood. This award is sponsored by my late brother's memorial fund, the Kerry Kane Memorial from Kahnawake. His life was taken as a result of a high steel accident.

Wayne's laughter was infectious, and his humor is remembered by anyone who met him. His best stories were of himself, making light of worst possible situation and making everyone laugh at it. Surely it was to see the light that comes after darkness in one's life.
