Wolves Hockey

By Derrick Lafrance

In years past, decades ago, Akwesasne and Cornwall had a fierce rivalry on the lacrosse floor. That spirit has gone dormant since then but earlier this month it was reignited on the ice.

The Akwesasne Wolves Midget club had a tilt against the Cornwall Colts in the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League Feb. 11 on Kawehnoke.

The Wolves jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Khyler Johnson and Kyden Burns with Treyton Sunday and Warren Oakes assisting.

There was some rough stuff early in the game to set the tone, but also big scoring chances from both sides. The Colts got off a goal to end the period 2-1.

In the middle period Alexis Bourget scored his first of two on the night to tie but that was short lived as a minute and a half later Johnson scored his second for Akwesasne.

In the final period Cornwall scored two to pull ahead 4-3. On their fourth goal, scored by captain Steve Williams, he knocked goalie Bentley Gray over and was given a game misconduct.

A minute later the Colts Bourget ran Johnson into the boards and Burns retaliated by hitting Bourget into the boards. Johnson would undergo surgery on his hand and Burns and Bourget were given game misconducts.

There were also a few late game ejections from both sides and the score clock ran out for the Wolves in the 4-3 loss.

In an earlier game in the evening, still in the Upper Canada loop - the Wolves Bantam rep club got their lone goal from Ienni Thompson as they lost to the Char Lan Rebels 4-1.

Dylan Adams and Kahontiio drew assists.
