The Salmon River Shamrocks girls varsity hockey team are the Section 10 champions.
They will play in the NYSPHSAA championship tournament Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7 and 8, at Herb Brooks Arena in Lake Placid, the venue of the legendary "Miracle on Ice" at the 1980 Winter Olympics.
They will play Section 3 champs Clinton on Friday at 6 p.m.
Salmon River played Potsdam on Saturday, Feb. 1 at SUNY Potsdam and scored three key goals over five minutes in the second period to win the Section 10 crown.
Hannah Johnson scored the first Salmon River goal 3:22 into the middle stanza, with an assist from Autumn Benedict. At 6:50, Olivia Moulton came through with the second SRC goal. Makhia Snyder concluded the rally with helpers from squadmates Rylee Garrow and Karli St. Ann.
With just over five minutes remaining in the second period, Potsdam's Kennedy Emerson took a pass from Daniella Emerson and punched in a goal. At 8:39 in the third frame, Emerson scored again.
Karahkwenhawe White with 3:07 left in the game fired in what would prove to be the game-winning goal after getting a pass from St. Ann with Garrow also picking up an assist on the play.
With just under two minutes on the clock, Potsdam pulled their goalie for an extra skater, and it worked. Emerson scored the third goal of her hat trick, but the Sandstoners were unable to tie the game and force overtime.
Salmon River goalie Carli Cartier turned aside 23 shots. Potsdam netminder Ava Johnson made 24 saves.
Salmon River earned their way into the Section 10 championship bout with a win over Alexandria Bay on Wednesday, Jan. 27. The final score was 3-0.
Karli St. Ann scored the only goal the 'Rocks would need just 12 seconds into the tilt on a play set up by Rylee Garrow.
The game was a stalemate until the third period, when Hannah Johnson scored with assists from Garrow and Makhia Snyder to make the score 2-0. The final SRC goal came off the stick of Talynn Wylie with 31 seconds remaining in regulation, assisted by Olivia Moulton and Emma Ransom.
Carli Cartier logged 23 saves on the night. Islanders goalie Jenna Christopher stood tall in the TI net with 60 saves, 29 of which occurred in the second period.
The Massena Raider girls' season concluded in Section 10 semi-finals the same night. They lost 9-1. Hannah Chilton logged the lone Massena marker. Kennedy Emerson scored three times for Potsdam. Danielle Emerson and Karley Green both scored two goals. Keely Towne and Isabel Boyd each scored once.
