Salmon River and Massena fare well over Potsdam, Gouverneur

The Salmon River girls and boys both beat Potsdam, and Massena's girls and boys both triumphed over Gouverneur during the week of Jan. 6.

In Potsdam on Friday, Dec. 10, the Shamrocks jumped out to a 45-18 halftime lead and nailed 12 three pointers en route to a 61-52 win. PJ Ghostlaw led the offense with 14 points, including four of their three-point shots. Clayton Jones tallied 13 points. Kyran Skidders and Hawi Francis-Cook each scored 10 points. Donovan Lazore fashioned five points. Logan Thomas and Charles Aldrich scored three points each. Tobias Jacobs picked up the other two. Noah Dominy sparked the Potsdam offense with 23 points.

The Lady Shamrocks squeezed past Potsdam in a close 44-41 bout on Thursday, Jan. 9. Kamea Thomas scored 22 points and, according to Coach Shawn Miller, had "a monster game defensively that led to fast break points." She also grabbed two boards.

He called the game "a big win for the Salmon River girls basketball team."

"Our defense was great and Mia (Leroux) and Kiyahna (Thompson) rebounded well. Lindsay (Martin) had a nice effort," the coach said. "Iohseriio (Tabor) sealed the win with free throws at the end."

Salmon River lagged 10-9 after the first quarter and trailed by one point 27-26 at halftime. They regrouped in the third quarter and got out to a 38-30 lead going into the closing frame and held their defensive ground for a 44-41 win. Lindsay Martin scored 10 points with two rebounds. Leroux scored six points and also pulled down 13 caroms. Tabor and Thompson each scored three points with two rebounds. Sierra Cummings (14 points) and Julia Basford (12 points) paced Potsdam.

The Shamrocks came into the Potsdam game off of a 62-18 loss to St. Lawrence Central three nights earlier. Salmon River fell back 22-3 after the first quarter and were unable to regain their footing. They fashioned three points in the second and third quarters, and seven in the fourth. Kamea Thomas scored seven points with five rebounds.

"If I had anything to say, [it's] that we have to put the ball in the basket. We're getting there, but we have to finish," Coach Martin said.

The Massena girls fought to a 37-26 win over Malone on Monday, Jan. 6. Hayleigh Armstrong set the pace for Massena with 19 points, including all five of their shots from the three-point line. Aryssa Hopps and Tori Jacobs each fashioned six points. Leah Gallagher led Malone with 12 points.

Massena Lady Raiders

The Massena Lady Raiders came up short against Lowville in a road game on Saturday Jan. 11. Massena trailed 11-9 after the first quarter and 29-22 at the half. Lowville stayed ahead 49-30 at the end of the third quarter and went on to win 55-40. Aryssa Hopps and Lexi Jacobs sparked the Massena offense with nine points each. Tsiakoseriio David scored seven points. Layla Bingham tallied six points and Nova LeGrow five. Shaylena Mandigo and Savannah Gauthier each scored two points. Lowville's Sydney Brown scored a game high 28 points.

The Massena boys lost to Indian River 50-30 the same day. They fell behind 9-4 after the first period, 25-13 after two and 45-28 going into the fourth quarter. Ethan Firnstein led the Raiders offense with 11 points. Chris McGregor scored seven points. Three points apiece came from Zach LaBarge and Ethan Barney. Joseph Weir, Luke Greco and Ryan Herrick each netted two points.

The Lady Raiders also won over Gouverneur, 61-44, in a game played the same day as the boys contingent.

The Massena boys took a 52-32 win over Gouverneur on Friday, Jan. 10. They took a 14-6 lead after the first quarter and held on 27-8 at the half and 40-27 after three stanzas. Ryan Herrick and Luke Greco led Massena on the offensive side with a dozen points each. Ethan Firnstein scored 11 points and Chris McGregor came through with 10. Zach LaBarge netted three points. Mark Perry and Ethan Barney each tallied two points.

The Raiders lost to Franklin Academy on Tuesday, Jan. 7 in Massena. Ryan Herrick paced the Raiders with 14 points. Zach LaBarge and Chris McGregor each scored 10 points. For Malone, Gavin Barse scored 12 points and Keegan Monette fashioned 11.
