Massena girls skate past Malone; Lady Shamrocks tie with Clinton

The Massena Lady Raiders posted a decisive 5-2 victory over Franklin Academy at home on Friday, Dec. 27 and the Lady Shamrocks battled to a 1-1 tie with Clinton the same evening.

In the Massena game, the Raiders scored all they needed plus an insurance goal in the opening stanza. Meg Wilmshurst scored the opening goal at 3:17, followed by Millie King just under four minutes later. Brooke Terry punched in what would prove to be the game-winner, plus an insurance goal. The first goal was unassisted. Hannah Chilton picked up one of her three assists on the insurance marker. Breigh Nelson posted the first Malone goal with 38 seconds left in the first period.

The second period was a stalemate. In the third period, the Huskies' Vail St. Hilaire scored the second FA goal, but Wilmshurst returned Massena to a three-goal lead unassisted with a shorthanded goal with just 34 seconds left on the clock.

Hayley Boyce made 19 saves in the Massena net. FA goalkeeper Gina Norcross turned aside 16 shots.

The same night, the Lady Shamrocks tied 1-1 with Clinton at Tom Cavanaugh Arena in Fort Covington.

Clinton's opening goal came 5:24 into the opening frame from Mia Lopata with a helper from Ariel Williamson. After 8:11 in the second period, Karli St. Ann tied the game after getting the puck from Myranda Collette. Sierra Norton turned aside 16 shots for Salmon River. Hailey Millington made 24 saves for Clinton.

On Friday, Dec. 27 the Raiders boys lost to West Genesee 6-2 in a tournament at Shove Park Arena. While trailing 1-0 going into the second period, Massena was outscored 4-1 during the 15-minute frame. Then each team fashioned a single marker in the closing stanza. Massena's Nicholas Morrell scored the opening goal 3:09 into the second period on an unassisted play. With just under four minutes remaining in the third period, Chris Marasco scored the second Massena goal on a play set up by Morrell.

The next day at Shove Park Arena, Massena lost to Suffern 9-3. All three Massena goals occurred in the third period. Nicholas Linstad scored the first two, the first unassisted and the second with a helper from Morrell. Mikey Kuhn scored the third goal, also assisted by Morrell.
