A Voice from the Eastern Door
December 22, 2019
At the December Monthly Meeting I, Ruth Bell, made a motion that a committee be formed to review our Procedures Act. The motion passed. The purpose of the committee would be to review and make recommendations for changes which would then have to be voted on by referendum.
The Procedures Act came about because there came a time that the community realized that there needed to be rules and regulations to help guide the chiefs when making decisions that would affect ourselves, our children and our grandchildren’s future.
At the work session held the Wednesday after the monthly meeting, discussion regarding the motion was tabled due to Chief Connors’ absence. We were told that the other two chiefs did not want to hold discussion without him. There will not be another work session until January 2020 and for something this important the sooner the Community starts thinking about and hopefully making notes about things that they would like to see clarified to help preserve our culture, education, health and governance, the better!
Just to list a few items that I have heard discussed by members of the community:
1) change from 3 chief system to 5, 6 or 7 chief system
2) limit number of terms a chief may serve
3) change amount of money the chiefs may spend without first consulting the community
If there are things happening in your Community that you would like to see addressed than I urge you to make note of it and bring it to the Thursday night meetings at the Senior Center 5:30 to 7 p.m. The next meeting is 1/9/2020.
