Salmon River girls narrowly downed in Provost tourney; Massena avenges OFA loss over Carthage

The Salmon River Shamrocks girls varsity basketball team defeated Parishville-Hopkinton but then went on to lose the Heather Provost Tournament championship game by just four points. And the Massena boys contingent avenged a loss to Ogdensburg by trouncing Carthage two nights later.

"We did a nice job tonight coming off a loss to Gouverneur last night with a great defensive effort. The offense will come, as long as we continue to clamp down our defense," said Salmon River Coach Shawn Martin after the team defeated Parishville-Hopkinton.

In the P-H game, Kamea Thomas sparked the Shamrocks offense with 18 points, seven rebounds and 15 steals as the squadron held down a 20-9 lead by halftime. Lindsay Martin scored four points, along with seven boards and seven steals. Ioseriio Tabor, who also scored four points, stole the ball eight times and grabbed six caroms. Meg Martin picked up three points. The remaining two came from Kiyhana Thompson. Sydnie Phippen led SRF with 10 points.

Massena easily took down the Carthage Comets on Saturday, Dec. 14 by a 73-36 final score. After a close 13-10 first quarter, Massena took off and got ahead 37-22 by halftime and 51-33 by the third quarter buzzer. Christopher McGregor scored a game high 24 points. Ryan Herrick and Zachary Labarge netted 12 points each. Adam Peets and Ethan Firnstein scored eight points each. Two points apiece came from Luke Greco, Thomas McGregor and Luke von Borstel. Joseph Weir made a free throw.

Massena lost to Ogdensburg at home two nights earlier by a 66-35 final tally. OFA held Massena to just three points in the first quarter and leapt ahead by 29-11 at the half. Chris McGregor led Massena on offense with 13 points. Firnstein had an 11-point game. Thomas McGregor and Peets connected for three points each. Weir and Hayden Amo scored two points each. OFA's Mesean Johnson scored a game high 18 points. Jackson Jones scored 17.

The evening of Dec. 12 saw the Lady Shamrocks fall 66-10 to Gouverneur.

"Gouverneur is very fast and beat us up the floor too many times for easy lay ups. We need to work harder on that aspect," Coach Martin said.

Tabor came through with nine rebounds and two points. Thomas had an "excellent defensive effort," the coach said. She tallied five boards, four steals and two points. Lindsay Martin scored four points. Two points came from Thompson. Shantall Sweet and Laney Smith paced Gouverneur with 13 points apiece.

The Massena girls defeated Potsdam 57-45 on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Aryssa Hopps led the way with 15 points. Tsiakoseriio David and Laylah Bingham each scored 12 points. Sierra Cummings scored 19 for Potsdam.

The Lady Raiders lost to OFA 46-32 on Friday, Dec. 13. Hopps netted four points, as did Kailey Peets. Laylah Bingham paced Massena's offense with eight points. Nova LeGrow scored six points. Two points apiece came from Hayliegh Armstrong, Shaylena Mandigo and Tsiakoseriio David. Tori Jacobs and Savannah Gauthier each hit a free throw. Gabrielle Morley led OFA with 14 points.

The Salmon River boys downed Colton-Pierrepont on Tuesday, Dec. 10. Hawi Cook-Francis led the way with 13 points. Kyran Skidders netted 11 points. Logan Lebehn scored 11 points. Aiden Knight led C-P with eight points.

The 'Rocks picked up another win, this one over Gouverneur, three nights later. The final score was 45-34. Hawi Francis-Cook had a big night with 23 points and 14 rebounds. Logan Lebehn scored eight points with 17 boards. PJ Ghostlaw notched eight assists. Connor Wood and Brock Cox paced the Wildcats with a dozen points each.

The Lady Shamrocks lost to OFA 65-6 on Tuesday the 10th, and the boys squadron also lost to OFA 73-47 the evening prior.
