FLW wants to bring top bass pro angler tourney to Massena in 2020; Bass Nation eyes Raquette & Grasse for 2021 kayak fishing derby

By Andy Gardner

Fishing League Worldwide (FLW) will hold its 2020 season-ending championship on the St. Lawrence River at Massena Aug. 8 to 13.

And Bass Nation, which is part of Bassmaster, is eyeing Massena for a kayak fishing tournament in 2021, Don Meissner told the Town Council at their Wednesday, Nov. 20 meeting.

Meissner is contracted by the town to market it as a fishing tourism destination.

The FLW circuit for 2020 will feature a field of 150 pro anglers competing across seven regular-season tournaments that culminate with the FLW TITLE championship in Massena.

“They’re really excited about a 2021 tournament here,” he said.

Meissner also told the board that Fishing League Worldwide, who hosted a major tournament in Massena earlier this year, wants to bring their pro circuit championship to Massena in 2020. It will bring the top 50 pro bass anglers in the country competing for a $200,000 first prize. The 50th place angler will still receive $10,000.

Major League Fishing (MLF) announced last month the acquisition of FLW, calling it the most significant brand merger in competitive bass fishing history. It links MLF’s tour and original, award-winning programming that features the top professional anglers in the world with FLW’s extensive grassroots organization that serves tens of thousands of competitive anglers across all levels from high school and college to weekenders and tour pros, a press release said.

The 2020 FLW Pro Circuit schedule, along with complete details, rules and payouts for the season can be found online at FLWFishing.com.

Each FLW Pro Circuit regular-season tournament will feature FLW Live on-the-water coverage with five cameras on the final two days. The FLW TITLE championship will feature live on-the-water coverage with 10 cameras on the final two days. Each regular-season tournament will also be featured in a two-hour television episode while the FLW TITLE championship will be featured in six two-hour episodes. Each episode will air on the Outdoor Channel and the Sportsman Channel in 2020 for a total of 312 hours of programing featuring FLW Pro Circuit anglers. Every weigh-in will be streamed live on FLWFishing.com.

He said FLW was impressed by the way the locals treated them when they came over the summer.

“This is why the FLW has chosen Massena. It’s because of the treatment ... they’ve just never seen anything like that before,” Meissner said. “The fact that we have the fishing expo coming here in February, it gives all the more meaning. We have a message we can spread to all the people in the northeast what Massena is.”

Meissner said the 2021 kayak tourney would be on the Raquette and Grasse rivers.
