OPG Butterfly & Herb Garden Celebrates Completion of Phase 1

By: Jaclyn Hall

The OPG Visitor Center celebrated the opening of their Butterfly and Herb Garden, on Thursday August 22nd, with the successful completion of phase one. The Butterfly and Herb Garden is the beginning of a long term and sustainable landscape plan for the Saunders Hydro Dam Visitor Center.

The project was executed through a joint venture between Iroquois Consulting Group, an Akwesasne based business and M. Sullivan & Son Limited.

"When we got the contract, we reached out to businesses within our own community (Akwesasne); Delormier Trucking and Northern Landscapes to work on this project. We have such a talented labour force, but we didn't know how to access the opportunities that are out there, off the territory. So, we jumped in and said let's access it and we have with one of the greatest companies, M. Sullivan. There's a great future here, not only for us but for our community.", stated Vaughn Aldrich, co-founder of Iroquois Consulting Group.

As a part of the landscape, OPG has incorporated a butterfly and herb garden, both of which are consistent with the goals of the Visitor Center in the areas of biodiversity, environment and education. The Butterfly and Herb Garden will serve to educate, promote and advance knowledge of traditional uses and biological requirements of native, indigenous and sustainable herbs and plants.

Officials from OPG and Mohawk Council of Akwesasne made opening remarks, welcoming everyone and thanking those who worked on the joint project. Everyone was then invited to explore the completed portion of the Butterfly and Herb Garden, which concluded the event.
