The former IGA building was host to the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Vocational Rehabilitation's free community event, which took place Friday, August 23rd. The DisAbility Awareness Day event began at 9:00 a.m. and went on until 2:00 p.m., giving community members the opportunity to see the different programs and resources that are available to people with disabilities. Some of the programs set up during the event, were programs such as ACCESS-VR, BOCES, Disability Rights N.Y, Parents to Parent Coalition, and many more.
"Each year, in August, we typically have this annual event sponsored by the Tribal Vocational
Rehabilitation Program. The TVR program works with individuals with disabilities. Every year, we're one of the only tribes who actively promote such an event like this. We have a day where we invite programs from in and around the community. In some way, shape or form these programs work with individuals and/or families of those who have disabilities. The day's event is really about raising awareness, educating on the subject, appreciating individuals and families of those who have disabilities," stated Director Jamie Bay.
There were also local vendors and live entertainment throughout the event, making it even more fun for those in attendance. After all the browsing and walking, everyone was invited to a free lunch, before some free door prizes were drawn. The live entertainment was a huge hit with those in attendance, with many dancing their way through the vendor booths.
