A Voice from the Eastern Door

2nd Annual Iakhihsohtha Carnival

By Mahlon Smoke

Iakhihsohtha. Dark clouds gathering in the sky above didn't stop the staff at Iakhihshota from holding a second Carnival to raise money for our Elders at Iakhihsohtha. Last year they held a large event with games, a small petting zoo and a magician to entertain. While the venue was smaller this year, the festivities were still enjoyable for all involved.

There was the Tota bingo where Elders could play to win any prize they wanted. Families of the grandparents enjoyed the delicious food that was cooked by Johnathan Lazore and many other volunteers. There were games of all kinds, the most popular being a dunk tank where everyone would pay five dollars to attempt to dunk one of the volunteering district chiefs; including Caroline Francis, Connie Lazore, and more were all dunked into the tank to the enjoyment of the community. A raffle was also held for a grand prize of a bonfire set.

But more importantly, it was a great chance for the Totas to enjoy a day out with their families. It can be difficult to take an elder out on the town or sometimes people are busy and can't visit as much as they want to. This was a chance for everyone to sit, visit, or try to dunk a chief in the tank. A great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
