A Voice from the Eastern Door

AUTISM AWARENESS CORNER

She:kon,

Great news, we had our first Non-Verbal Autism Early Years and Toddlers Training on August 8th, 2019. I would like to extend a great big hug and ‘Nia:wen ko:wa’ to ALL those who attended. I totally understand it was hard for the parents to find respite care for their Autistic sweeties. We had visitors from Cornwall, Ingleside, Alexandria, Glengarry, and our own parents/providers here in Akwesasne. I really enjoyed the turnout we had, it brought light to what is needed in our community and surrounding communities as well.

In my opinion, we do need our own ‘special need facility’ here in Akwesasne. This is a great importance to myself and my team of therapists. With the three of them on my side to help gain awareness, training, info sessions and the list goes on and on.

Don’t be shy to contact me if you would like to join our team and /or if you have and questions and or concerns on what training we can provide next.  There is a chance of a part two Non-Verbal, stay tuned.

Thank you to the Tsi Snaihne Daycare workers who attended, thank you to District Chief Carolyn Francis for her attendance as well. A Big Hug to the mama’s, bubba’s and tota’s that also came as family support is essential. Each of our attendees have earned a Certificate of Participation and an Autism Awareness Decal. Also, ‘Nia:wen Ko:wa’ to Snipe Catering for providing us a with light, refreshing, yummy lunch. And, I cannot forget the Devine Chocolate cupcakes from “Okwen’s Cupcakes”. A special ‘Thank You’ to Robyn Mitchell, DCSS Program Director for Sponsoring this event.

In the meantime, stay tuned for upcoming events.
