Tribe Implements Seasonal Road Weight Restrictions

AKWESASNE – The Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal Council announced they have signed Tribal Council Resolution 2019-31 on Ohiarihkó:wa/July 17, 2019 that approves seasonal road weight restrictions for the coming years. The road weight restrictions become effective next spring from Enniskó:wa/March 1, 2020 to Onerahtohkó:wa/May 15, 2020 and will apply to all roads within the jurisdiction of the Tribe.

"Community members have voiced the need to protect the investments that have been made towards improving our community's roads over the past several years," said Compliance Director Elliott Lazore. Lazore noted, "Local residents recommended weight restrictions be implemented for our roads however, there will be a process to allow some overweight vehicles during this time period."

Beginning on Enniskó:wa/March 1st, the following seasonal weight restrictions will be enforced until Onerahtohkó:wa/May 15th of each year: six (6) tons for gross load for single axle vehicles; ten (10) tons gross load for tandem axle vehicles (any two axles under 8 feet apart); and a maximum gross load of 24 tons for multiple axles.

Under TCR 2019-31; signs will be posted along Akwesasne's roadways alerting drivers of the seasonal weight restrictions, as well as public notifications provided each year prior to the weight restriction season. Policies and procedures will also be in place to permit occasional access for vehicles that exceed the weight limit.

"The Tribe's Planning & Infrastructure Department has been making an effort to help repair and, in some cases, to completely rebuild the roads in our community," said Construction Manager Brent Herne. Herne added, "Having seasonal road weight restrictions is one way to minimize the wear and tear on our roads, which ultimately causes damage to our personal vehicles."
