A Voice from the Eastern Door
By Derrick Lafrance
Making a new friend and learning arts and crafts while having fun was the aim of this event for the kids. The Akwesasne Zero 2 Six early childhood program sponsored the event held at the St. Regis Recreation pavilion last weekend. Kids picked a teddy bear, or brought their own from home, decorated it up and then built a house for them. In between they did arts and crafts, had story time and snacks.
The Akwesasne Zero 2 Six program has several locations in Akwesasne where kids learn culture and do other activities as well as fun games and learning. They are at the recreation centers in the three districts in Akwesasne and other places as well. Having the children do activities immersed in culture is a big component in the program with guests brought in to teach. They also had a Breastfeeding and Pre-Natal support group, Baby Moccasin making classes, cooking with Totas class and a trip to the new splash pad at Tsi Snaihne Recreation Centre. In between they play games at their respective community centers and get a jump start on a healthy lifestyle.
