A Voice from the Eastern Door
Wellness Week
By Derrick Lafrance
In keeping with the theme of Wellness Week last week, Ionkwakiohkwaro:ron the new Saint Regis Mohawk Tribal building, had on display local services and information.
A steady flow of people came throughout the day to see the resources and some took advantage of the hands-on booths about topics such as diabetes and information about testing.
There was also a Poker Walk around the Walking Trail and participants with the winning hands had several prizes to choose from.
The Akwesasne Mohawk Police were on hand with their "Beer Goggles" to simulate how drugs and alcohol impair your judgement. With the recent marijuana availability, the police are focusing their efforts into making the kids aware of how dangerous it is. Constable Norman King, AMPS Community Service Officer, said the users are getting younger and might be unaware of how potentially dangerous the drugs are. The participants at the police booth had two sets of the goggles - one for ecstasy and the other for alcohol and had activities to test their judgement.
There were giveaways and drawings throughout the day, and it was hoped the people will take advantage of the many services that are available to reach their goal of living healthy. Another of the hands-on displays was a blood screening clinic and tables full of useful information for options on helping to reach that goal.
The Akwesasne Boys and Girls Club held a luncheon and other local services from the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne had information booths, all keeping with the theme of the day: Wellness.
