A Voice from the Eastern Door

June 15th marked World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and the Office for the Aging organized an event to coincide with the day. The event was held on Friday, June 14th, and was sponsored by the Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe's Office for the Aging. Several organizations set up tables with educational information and some door prizes. The organizations and programs present during this year's Elder Abuse Awareness Day were ECDP, Office for the Aging, SRMT Health Services, Bank of Montreal, Akwesasne Community Justice Program, Three Sisters Program, Alzheimer's Disease Caregiver Support Initiative, Akwesasne Mohawk Police and Adult and Child Protective Services.
A lot of good resources and information was shared, giving the seniors in Akwesasne a better understanding of the different help that is out there for themselves and their caregivers. Some of the initiatives and programs are new, such as the Akwesasne Community Justice Program's Victim Services, while others have been in Akwesasne for some years, but are not well known to many seniors. A select few are willing and able to serve Seniors throughout Akwesasne, no matter what side of the border they live, although some programs are only able to serve Seniors who live on the U.S. side of Akwesasne. Any senior, no matter where they live, can go to the Office for the Aging and receive the help and assistance needed. "It's important elders know we respect them and they are important to us," stated organizer Helen Gray.
