A Voice from the Eastern Door
(May 6, 2019) The Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service will be celebrating Police Week from May 12-18, 2019. Police Week is an annual event that is focused on raising awareness on the work of police services in Canada and the United States. It is an opportunity to commend all members of police services for their strong commitment to keeping our communities safe.
Police Week was first observed in 1970 and coincides with Peace Officer Memorial Day, which is recognized internationally on May 15. Each year police proudly select a theme to highlight and celebrate the important role of our police officers, dispatchers, and personnel in promoting healthy and safe communities across the country. The police theme for 2019 is “Proudly Supporting Our Police.”
The Akwesasne Mohawk Police and partner agencies will be hosting a number of events in the community to help promote the bonds between police officers and the people of the community they serve. Some events include breakfast/lunch with our elders, kids/teens fishing, the Tom Longboat run, and AMPS open house.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics will take on May 16, 2019, from the Kana:takon School. The purpose of this event is to raise awareness for Special Olympics throughout Canada. This year we are expecting a large number of teachers, students, and MCA programs to participant. We are asking community residents to please tie up your animals and obey traffic laws.
If you have any questions, please contact the Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service at 613-575- 2340.
