The Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment outdid themselves once again, organizing this year's Masquerade. This year's annual Me and My Guy and Me and My Gal Dance took place back to back, on Saturday April 27th. The Masquerade, which was a free event for children from Pre-K to Grade 5 and the special someone in their lives. This is the 2nd Annual Me and My Gal Dance, and the 6th Annual Me and My Guy Dance. Having the Me and My Gal Dance is relatively new, but needed none the less. There are plenty of mother, aunties and totas who enjoy having the opportunity to spend some one on one time with the little men in their lives.
Beginning at 12:00 pm, the "Me and My Guy" portion of the Masquerade began. Some of Akwesasne's finest little gentleman escorted their dates to the annual dance. Giving the woman in these young men's life an opportunity to spend a little one on one time with their son, nephew, grandson or stepson; a day to remember! After 2 hours the first portion of the dance was finished.
The second event of the day, the "My Guy and Me Dance" began at 3 p.m. Some lucky little girls were escorted to the dance by some of the most important men in their lives. With music playing and some healthy competition, the event was bound to be a success. "Everyone has a hand in making this event successful.
"Whether it be decorating, chaperoning, organizing or cleaning up, everyone from the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment helped in one way or another. We have some more coalition events coming up, such as the Color Run, Back to School and Fall Fest, which is set to take place at Generations Park," stated one of the organizers, Olivia Cook.
All Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment events are free for the community, which help them to further their vision for Akwesasne. The Coalition's main vision is "To create a healthy community for individuals, families and youth in Akwesasne." To go a step farther, all of Akwesasne could benefit from really making the Akwesasne Coalition for Community Empowerment's Mission Statement a reality in everyday life.
The Coalition's mission statement reads "Together we have strength, bringing our Mindanao community resources together to empower our community and its members to live healthy drug free lives by modelling a strong positive foundation for our future generations."
