A Voice from the Eastern Door

The Cornwall Midget Red Typhoon ended the season in ODWHA league play with a trip to the house league B Championship match. With 13 girls of the 14-member team previously playing under the Akwesasne Wolves in the last years, the Red Typhoons team was very familiar to head coach Steve Kuhn. Coach Steve was more than pleased with the level of play and results, given 8 of the girls on the team are Bantam aged players. These younger players competed at the same level as their opponents that were up to 3 years older. In house league regular season play, the Red Typhoons fared well with 5 wins, 6 losses and 9 tied games, which placed them 7th in the East Division and 14th out of 24 division teams.
In the B playoff, the second seeded Red Typhoons ended preliminary play in second place thanks to a 3-0-1 record. The Red Typhoons posted a 1-0 win over the Cornwall Black Typhoons, a 2-0 win over the Glengarry Highlanders, a 2-1 win over the Goulbourn Rockets M2 and a 1-1 tie against Gloucester M2. In the Championship Game, the Red Typhoon were facing the number 1 seed – Kanata Rangers M4. The teams battled during the first 2 periods without either team scoring. The Rangers opened the scoring at 10:37 in the third period. With a few minutes left in the game, the Red Typhoons pulled its goalie in hopes to even the score. Unfortunately, the Rangers put an end to the game by scoring on the empty net with 5 seconds left.
The Red Typhoons would like to thank Welch LLP, Emard Lumber, G.W. Blais Paving and CKON Radio for the sponsorships to allow the team to participate in the Kinston, Brockville, Glengarry and Kanata tournaments during the season.
