INFORMATION SESSION - INDIAN DAY SCHOOLS CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT

Were you or a family member a student at a Federal Indian day school?

Did you or a family member experience abuse at one of these schools?

The Ministry of Crown-Indigenous Relations has announced in March 2019 that they will be settling a class action lawsuit regarding the federally-recognized Indian day schools and students that attended these schools will be receiving compensation. If you or a family member were one of the students who attended one of the Indian day schools located in Akwesasne between 1920 and the date in which the school was transferred to the band council government or closed, you are encouraged to have your story known.

The Akwesasne schools that are recognized in the class action suit are as follows:

• Cornwall Island East – Operated from February 10, 1936 to September 1958

• Cornwall Island West – Operated from 1876/1877 – October 1980

• St. Regis Village School – Operated from 1836 – 1990

• St. Regis Indian School – Operated from 1885 – 1953

• Chenail (Snye) School – Operated from 1881 – 1991

Former students or family members of students who attended any of these schools are encouraged to attend a community session on Monday, April 29 at the Kana:takon Recreation Center at 6 p.m. The lead legal counsel for the class will be present to answer any questions regarding this class action lawsuit. To contact Gowling WLG, the legal counsel for the class action, call their toll-free number 844-539-3815 or contact Vanessa Lessard at [email protected].
