The North Franklin (NF) basketball program concluded its youth basketball season for the 2018-19 year.
There were approximately 50 kids that participated in three separate categories. The program is run totally by community volunteers from the Director of NF basketball to the coaches in order to teach the fundamentals of basketball and provide an enjoyable experience for all involved.
The categories are split as follows:
Director – Shawn Martin
Kindergarten to Grade 2 – Coached by Shawn Martin and assisted by Lindsay Martin, Lane Oakes, Tyler Huto, Toby Jacobs, and Dylan Beam, whom are members of the SR girls and boys Basketball teams.
Grades 3 and 4 – Coached by Tsiorasa Barreiro and Randy Hart
Grades 5 and 6 – Coached by Gerry Oakes and Melissa Cross
The K through grade 2 program is an 8 to 10 - week introduction to basketball involving simple ballhandling, dribbling, passing, layups, some shooting, and defensive stances. Practices were every Saturday at 11am.
The grade 3 and 4 practiced on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning in December and worked on more layups, shooting, passing skills, as well as introduced them to a team defense and offense in order to get them to scrimmage by February/March.
The grade 5 and 6 stepped up that level of play to focus on proper shooting form, passing, pick and roll, offense and defense in a faster setting. They scrimmaged earlier and are presently still playing in local tournaments.
The coaches were excited to get things going as the older kids went longer than normal. The kids enjoyed learning the game and the excitement of watching the kids learn and grow is what really keeps the program alive. We hope to get more and more kids involved in the program, especially the girls as we lack numbers for them. Be on the lookout every October/ November when registration starts and don't be afraid to step up and volunteer your time in teaching / coaching the great kids, you won't be disappointed.
We would like to thank the NF athletic committee for their time, effort, and volunteer work as well to keep these programs alive and well.
