A Voice from the Eastern Door

The long-awaited 2019 Akwesasne Children's Traditional Powwow is fast approaching. The Children's Powwow is set to take place on March 9th at the former IGA building on Route 37. This year the Native North American Travelling College has organized workshops for the children who would like to learn and participate in this year's Children's Powwow.
Beginning on Monday February 11th, the "Boys Traditional and Smoke Dance" workshop took place at the Kawehno:ke Recreation. The following day, February 12th, the "Girls Jingle, Fancy and Traditional" workshop took place. The workshops were once a week, from 6 pm to 8pm, giving the children plenty of time to practice before their big debut. Dedicated and excited youth would show up to dance their hearts out.
A total of 8 workshops occurred throughout the last month, giving parents and their children time to get out and practice. All the hard work and determination in some of the children's eyes is a good indicator that this year's Children's Powwow will be one for the books. There is a lot of talent and willingness to learn and the more accessible it is for children to come out and practice their art, the more dedicated they will become.
