Salmon River Shamrocks boys basketball won their first playoff game and the Lady Shamrocks basketball team’s season has come to a close.
Meanwhile, Massena and Salmon River boys hockey, as well as Massena girls basketball, have closed out their regular seasons and are gearing up for sectional playoffs.
On Thursday, Feb. 14, the Shamrocks won the opening round of the Section 10 basketball playoffs on their home court. They defeated Gouverneur 47-39. After trailing 20-19 at the half, the ‘Rocks returned to outscore their opponents 13-10 in the third quarter and dominated the final stanza. Clayton Jones paced the Salmon offense with 15 points, six rebounds and three steals. Dylan Beam tallied 12 points, including two threes, and five steals. Logan Lebehn had six points, PJ Ghostlaw five and Hawi Francis scored four points, along with five blocks. Greg Burdash scored three points and Cayden Sunday two. For Gouverneur, Garrison Gonyeau scored 19 points, Brock Cox scored 10, Ty Reed six points and Garret Leclair four.
Salmon River was to have played Ogdensburg on Monday, Feb. 18, the winner of which will advance to play Canton for the class B title at SUNY Potsdam on Friday, Feb. 22.
The Lady Shamrocks’ season came to a close in Section 10 playoffs on Thursday, Feb. 14. After hosts Potsdam got out to a 37-10 lead at the half, Salmon River lost by a 63-17 final score.
The Shamrocks boys hockey squadron have earned a bye in the first round of Division II playoffs and will host a semi-final home game on Thursday, Feb. 21. On Friday, Feb. 15, the Shamrocks lost 4-3 to Canton in regular season action. Canton built a 3-0 lead in the middle frame and held off a Salmon River comeback. While down 2-0, Cameron Cartier took a pass from Kaden Conners and Tim Cook 13:28 into the second period. Fifty-nine seconds into the closing stanza, Jalen Cook scored on a play set up by Cartier and Alex Oakes. Talon Thompson scored the final SRC goal with 5:34 left in the game, assisted by Connor Lewis and Zach Durant. John Jacobs made 35 saves. Canton goals came off the sticks of Sam Martin and Jack Finnerty, who scored a hat trick. Rhett Palmer had two assists. Finnerty and Martin assisted once. Hayden Todd made 19 saves.
On Thursday, Feb. 14, the Massena Raiders skated to a blowout 10-2 win over hosts Potsdam at Pine Street Arena. Chris Paige (two assists) scored five of the first six goals of the game for Massena. He notched two in the first period and three in the second. The middle stanza included a three-goal burst over the final eight minutes. Massena in the third period fired in five goals. Nick Morrell (two assists), Michael Kuhn (one assist), Jack Campbell, Matt Trimboli and Ryan Letham all scored once. Caleb D’Arienzo, Zack Monacelli and Garrett Engstrom each had single assists. Casey Hooper (17 saves) and Benjamin Rogers (five saves) each spent time covering the Massena net. Danner Dorothy and Bryan Jones each scored for Potsdam. Liam Hourihan made 27 saves. Massena and Potsdam were to have faced off on Wednesday, Feb. 20 at Massena Arena for the Division I playoffs opening round. The winner will advance to play against Canton on Monday, Feb. 25 at Cheel Arena in Potsdam.
On Monday, Feb. 11, Massena lost 5-0 to Norwood-Norfolk at Massena Arena. Bobby Voss scored three goals and an assist, including the only goal N-N needed, which was assisted by Cody Fobare and Jude Lauzon. After a stalemate second period where both teams shot a combined 39 times, Voss scored his second 39 seconds into the third period, assisted by Reed Gravlin. Nate Moulton and Bodie Molnar also came through for the Icemen. Thomas Cafarella made 34 saves for N-N. Casey Hooper made 37 for Massena.
The same night, Salmon River won 6-1 over hosts Alexandria Bay.
“Alex Bay is a small rink and a tough place to play. We played a great road game. We came through in the third to finish things off,” Salmon River Coach Tim Cook said in an email following the game.
Cameron Cartier scored their first goal 2:02 into the game on a play set up by Dillon St. Ann-Spinner. Mason Aubertine tied the contest 3:58 into the stanza. Kaden Conners scored the only goal of the second period, assisted by Cartier and Tim Cook with 6:03 left in the frame. In the closing stanza, Cartier sparked a third-period rally after taking a pass from St. Ann-Spinner at 1:23. Ranohraiesta Mitchell scored the fourth SRC goal 12 seconds later, followed by Khyler Johnson at 6:44 and Cartier with 2:09 left in regulation. St. Ann-Spinner tallied three assists. Jared Showen and Raven Conners helped set up one play each. John Jacobs (four saves) and Preston Hemlock (17 saves) split goaltender detail for the Shamrocks. Trey Thompson turned aside 32 shots for A-Bay.
On Saturday, Feb. 9, Massena girls basketball lost 49-40 to hosts Ogdensburg. Aryssa Hopps scored 10 points, pacing the Lady Raiders offense. Nova LeGrow scored eight points, while Rhea Bautista and Octavia Viskovich had four each. Hayliegh Armstrong and Tori Jacobs each fashioned two points. Emily Farrand led OFA with nine points. Massena was to have played Malone in the Section 10 Class A title game at SUNY Potsdam on Sunday, Feb. 17.
