By: Jaclyn Hall
Saturday, February 16th, was a night to remember. The long-awaited singing contest hosted during the 2019 Akwesasne Winter Carnival brought out some of the most talented singers in the community. This is the 4th year the Snye Recreation has organized "The Voice" singing contest. This year it was held at the St. Regis Recreation. The event coincided with multiple activities taking place indoors and outdoors, giving community members plenty of fun things to do.
The Voice kicked off at 6 p.m. with Kevin Lazore emceeing the event. DJ Roger Mitchell was on deck playing music for the contestants. Organizer Mary Faye Roundpoint also got the crowd going by singing her heart out. The singing contest began with the first age group, 12 and under, singing their song of choice. The next category to go up on stage was the 13 to 18-year-old singers. Saving the best for last, the adult category had the most participants, showing you can have fun at any age.
The judges, Sweets Jacobs, Benjamin Herne, Billy Jackson and Teioswathe, had a hard job deciding who would take 1st and 2nd place in each category. Once the judges tallied up the contestants scores the winners were announced for each age category.
In the 12 and under category, Brynlee Roundpoint came in 1st place and London Lazore came in 2nd place. In the 13 to 18 age category, Kiawentiio Tarbell came in 1st place and Iahrakwas Peters came in 2nd place. For the Adult category, 18 and up, Brittany Boots came in 1st and Basil Lazore came in 2nd. Organizer Mary Faye Roundpoint announced that next year "The Voice" singing contest will be held at the Snye Recreation.
