After clinching a chance to play for the Section 10 title, the Massena Lady Raiders lost the championship game to Potsdam on Saturday, Feb. 2.
The final score was 9-1. Ella Oakes scored the lone Massena marker early in the second period, on a play set up by Kylie Letham and Katy Underwood. Mackenzie Garrow made 23 saves. Kennedy Emerson and Erica Sloan paced the Potsdam offense, with Emerson scoring four times and Sloan scoring twice while assisting four markers.
Massena Central battled to an overtime win over the defending champions Salmon River in the Section 10 girls hockey playoffs semifinal round.
The final tally of the game, played Wednesday, Jan. 30 at Tom Cavanaugh Arena in Fort Covington, was 3-2.
In the semifinal contest, Salmon River pulled ahead 2-0 after two periods. But then Massena took over in the third stanza, forcing overtime, where Hannah Chilton fired in the game-winning goal, unassisted 39 seconds in.
Emma Ransom scored the first goal of the game for the ‘Rocks, assisted by Olivia Moulton, with 4:27 left in the first period. Her teammate Makhia Snyder scored the second SRC goal 9:45 into the second frame, assisted by Talynn White. Meg Wilmshurst scored the first goal for Massena 41 seconds into the third period, assisted by Chilton. Katy Underwood scored Massena’s second goal, tying the game, with 6:29 left in the third, assisted by Chilton and Wilmshurst. Mackenzie Garrow made 21 saves for Massena. Carli Cartier made 26 saves for SRC.
Massena and Salmon River met for several other hockey and basketball games during the same week.
On Tuesday, Jan. 29, Massena’s boys basketball team bested the Shamrocks 60-42. The Raiders’ Tyler Bacon scored 18 points with 15 boards, four assists and three steals. Alex Rusaw scored 10 points, Tyler McDonald eight and Josh Sheets five. Four points each came from Ryan Herrick, Spencer Beckstead and Ethan Firnstein. Ethan Barney scored three points and two each came from Luke Greco and Zach LaBarge.
For Salmon River, Clayton Jones led the offense with 14 points. PJ Ghostlaw scored 13, Cayden Sunday seven, Gregory Burdash, Lane Oakes and Rarennenhawi Cook-Francis all scored two and Dylan Beam and Logan Lebehn each made a free throw.
On Monday, Jan. 28, Massena’s girls basketball squadron won over Salmon River 63-11 in Massena. The Raiders’ Nova LeGrow scored a game-high 16 points. Tori Jacobs scored 14 points, Octavia Viskovich 10, Aryssa Hopps five, Hayleigh Armstrong and Tisha Benedict four each, Rhea Bautista three and Shaylena Mandigo, Laylah Bingham and Tsiakoseriio David two each. Jill Benedict led the Shamrocks with five points. Annabelle Mitchell scored four and Kahnekahawi two.
The same day, the Shamrocks’ boys hockey team skated to a 4-3 win over Massena. The ‘Rocks fell behind 2-0 but tied the game in the third period, then came back to win after one minute into overtime. Kaden Conners scored the game-winner. Michael Kuhn scored the first goal of the game for Massena 3:36 into regulation on a power play. Chris Paige made it 2-0 six minutes later, assisted by Kuhn and Robert Southwick. Tim Cook put SRC on the board with a goal three minutes into the second stanza on a play set up by Cameron Cartier and Alex Oakes. Southwick returned Massena to a two-goal lead about two minutes later, with assists from Paige and Nicholas Morrell. Dillon St. Ann-Spinner punched in the second Salmon marker 1:09 into the third frame on a power play. Ian Mitchell tied the game and forced overtime with 4:11 left on the clock. Preston Hemlock made 18 saves for Salmon River. John Jacobs also spent time in the ‘Rocks net and made one save. Casey Hooper made 32 saves for the Raiders.
