World Wetlands Day 2019

By: Jaclyn Hall

Mohawk Council of Akwesasne's Environment Division, along with St. Lawrence River Institute, hosted this year's World Wetlands Day event. The event was held at the Anowarakowa Arena on February 2, 2019, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Community members were invited to come and check out all the wonderful things that make wetlands so unique. There were several activities for families to come out and enjoy together. Iakwa'shatste Youth Fitness provided snowshoes for an excursion outside of the Anowarakowa Arena. While inside of the facility, a paddling puppet show, prizes, food and education was around every corner of the main lobby and turtle room. Organizations such as the St. Lawrence River Institute, Akwesasne Mohawk Police, MCA Emergency Measures and Environment Division were present, sharing information and goodies to anyone who participated.

Anyone who came out to participate in the free event was given the opportunity to win some great prizes. The prizes are just one way to get the community excited about the event. This year there was some great people doing some great things getting the youth interested in Wetlands. As we know, Akwesasne has an abundance of wetlands throughout the territory. So, we need to take a personal interest in the conservation of our precious wetlands and every living being who depends on it.

"This year we are focusing more on education and going to schools to teach. We are also working on researching the number and location of minnows in our area. Whether it's on the Canadian side or not, we don't see the border when it comes to our work," stated Scott Peters from MCA's Environment Division.
