Salmon River had a successful week in hockey and basketball, tallying wins over Saranac Lake-Lake Placid, St. Lawrence, Potsdam, Gouverneur and Norwood-Norfolk.
Friday, Jan. 12, Salmon River 4, Saranac Lake-Lake Placid 1 – On their home ice in Fort Covington, the Lady Shamrocks scored the only goals they would need in the first period, supported by a 37-save performance from goaltender Carli Cartier. Madison Collette scored a goal with an assist. Rylee Garrow, Hannah Johnson and Talynn Wylie each scored solo markers. Makhia Snyder and Myranda Collette tallied an assist apiece. Katelyn Gay scored the lone goal for the competition, with assists from Lydia Bullock and Rylee Preston. Olivia Ferebee made 20 saves.
Wednesday, Jan. 9, Salmon River 6, St. Lawrence Central 0 – Tim Cook scored what would hold up as the game winner 61 seconds into the bout, after taking a pass from Kaden Conners and Cameron Cartier. They each also tallied respective goals later in the game. Dillon St. Ann-Spinner scored twice and Jared Showen once. Talon Thompson set up two plays. Preston Hemlock made 24 saves. John Miller took over with about eight minutes left in the game and denied three scoring chances. Toran Robertson turned aside 33 shots for SLC.
“Good road win for us tonight. We are starting to put things together offensively,” Salmon River Coach Tim Cook said in an email.
Wednesday, Jan. 9, Salmon River 2, Potsdam 1 – The Salmon River girls left their home ice with a narrow win over the Sandstoners. Kayla Cunningham notched the game-winning goal late in the closing stanza, finishing a play set up by Autumn Benedict. After a stalemate opening frame, Alana McDonald put Potsdam on the board in the middle period, assisted by Jessika Bullock and Anna Nelson. Myranda Collette tied the game with 39 seconds left in the second period, assisted by Madison Collette. Cartier stood tall in the Salmon River net with 36 saves.
Monday, Jan. 7, Salmon River 56, Gouverneur 54 – In working their way to a nailbiter finish, the ‘Rocks trailed 31-18 at the half and returned to the court for a 26-13 run in the third quarter and then denied a late Wildcats comeback. Hawi Francis paced Salmon with 21 points. Clayton Jones scored 16 points, Greg Burdash eight, Logan Lebehn six, Toby Jacobs four and Dylan Beam made a free throw. For Gouverneur, Brock Cox scored 24 points, Garrison Gonyea 17 and Garret LeClair 11.
Saturday, Jan. 5, Salmon River 2, Norwood-Norfolk 0 – Cameron Cartier scored the only needed goal at 13:11 in the opening stanza after taking a pass from St. Ann-Spinner. Tim Cook punched in the insurance goal, assisted by Cartier in the second period. John Jacobs made 27 saves for SRC and Thomas Cafarella 16 for N-N.
