COLLEEN T. BERO

AKWESASNE – Mrs. Colleen T. Bero, 57, of 42 Rooseveltown Road, passed away Sunday evening, December 23, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Colleen was born July 12, 1961 in Utica, the daughter of the late William P. and Christine P. (Edwards) Wheeler. She attended schools in Utica and Massena. On October 30, 1983, she married Leroy W. Bero in Fort Covington with Justice Jerome Brockway officiating.

Throughout her life, she worked at G&G Ice Cream Store, Bob's Motel, Garrow's Cigarette Factory, and Carey Terrance's Cigarette Factory. She was a member of the Akwesasne Death Benefits Group and a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church. She had a great love for being outdoors, whether it was fishing, working on her yard, or flower gardening – she found great peace outside. She also enjoyed tending to her houseplants, beading, and visiting the casino. Mostly, she cherished the time she was able to spend with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Colleen is survived by her husband, Leroy, her children, Leanne and Sean Armstrong and William Bero, all of Akwesasne; her grandchildren, Tyler, Taylor, and Taylin Armstrong; her sisters, Darlene and Bill Klotz, Maureen and Andy Bero, and Michelle and John Cole, all of Akwesasne; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two daughters, Leah Bero on March 5, 1990 and Hattie S. Bero on July 19, 2009; her grandson, Zane Peck on March 10, 2010; and her brothers, Elmer J. Wheeler in 1960, John Wheeler in 1987, Anthony E. Wheeler in 2000, William J. Wheeler, Jr. in 2003, and Donald Wheeler in 2015.

Friends called at the Akwesasne Homemakers from Thursday until Saturday. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Saturday, December 29, 2018 at St. Regis Catholic Church.

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice of the North Country.

Arrangements are with the Donaldson Funeral Home, Massena.
