AKWESASNE – Bruce "Check" Johnson, 61, of St. Regis Village unexpectedly passed away on January 6, 2019 in Plattsburgh. Beloved father of Marcus and Tory Thompson and beloved husband of 26 years to Liz Thompson.
Bruce was born in Cornwall, Ontario on February 21, 1957, the dear son of Irene (Sawatis) Johnson and the late Frank Johnson. He was predeceased by his father, Frank on November 28, 1982; his best friend, Kenneth "Poopsie" Diabo on August 18, 2018; and his younger brother, Terry "Lumox" Johnson on May 8, 2018.
Bruce was an ironworker out of the 711 Ironworkers Union in Montreal. He was an avid Montreal Canadiens fan. He played for various sports teams when he was younger including hockey and softball. He enjoyed watching and coaching lacrosse. He had a big heart, especially when it came to his family, friends, and animals. He enjoyed being on the water fishing and cruising.
He is survived by his wife, Liz and his two sons, Marcus and Tory all of St. Regis; his mother, Irene Johnson of St. Regis; his five sisters, Karen and her companion, Pat of Kawehnoke; Shirley of Las Vegas, NV; Audrey and her husband, Frank of Kahnawake; Pam and her companion, Bill of Massena; and Sherry and her husband, Lenny of Ganienkeh. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Charlene Johnson; and his wife's siblings, Theresa, Delia, Wanda, Viola, Joey, Roger, Leroy, and Gary; many nieces, nephews, cousins; and his godson, Keaton Johnson.
Friends may call at the family homestead, 139 Hilltop Drive, St. Regis starting 6:00 PM Wednesday until 1:00 PM Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, January 11, 2019 at 2:00 PM at St. Regis Catholic Church with Rev. Jerome Pastores celebrating.
Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Akwesasne Minor Lacrosse.
