Native North American Travelling College Cultural Educator

Job Description:

The Cultural Educator will be responsible to promote Haudenosaunee and/or Kanienkehaka culture that presents the uniqueness of our traditional culture and ways. The Cultural Educator will report to the Manager and is expected to work collaboratively with all staff at the NNATC.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Demonstrates knowledge of Kanienkehaka traditional culture and traditions.

• Assist in sharing knowledge of Kanienkehaka culture, traditions, songs and dances to area and schools outside Akwesasne.

• Assist Travel Troupe for various socials and/or presentations.

• Participate in identifying and implementing cultural workshops to community.

• Assist in providing tours of NNATC museum as needed.

• Assist in cultural sensitivity workshops as required.

• Draft content (i.e. introducing workshops, power point presentations, etc.) for mass media or company website.

• Research grant opportunities to bring resources to NNATC.

• Work with manager and/or others to develop proposals for funding.

• Develop and forward monthly reports to Manager outlining activities as well as recommending areas requiring improvements.

• Assist in development of culturally themed materials for public information and education purposes.

• Assisting all staff in other NNATC projects.

• Willingness to attend Mohawk language classes and/or other training as required.

• Be respectful of the policies and practices of the NNATC as a cultural education entity.

Qualifications:

Minimum high school graduate.

Extensive knowledge of Haudenosaunee and Kanienkehaka Cultural knowledge.

Knowledge of Haudenosaunee social songs and dances.

Knowledge of Akwesasne culture, history and current affairs.

Knowledge of current indigenous issues.

Skills:

Mohawk speaker definite asset.

Good public speaking skills.

Good writing and computer skills.

Must have a valid driver’s license.

May be some evening and weekend engagements.

Salary: $14.00 to 15.00 per hour or $29,000 – 31, 200 per year.
