AKWESASNE - Nancy Elizabeth Phillips, 71, of 381 Wade LaFrance Memorial Road, unexpectedly passed away on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at the Cornwall Community Hospital.
Nancy was born on July 20, 1947, in Kanatakon, daughter of the late Christie Smoke-Mitchell. She married Louis Phillips in the summer of 1990 at the St. Regis Catholic Church.
Nancy was a communicant of St. Regis Catholic Church, a member of the Altar and Rosary Society, and a volunteer at Homemakers. She was a housekeeper at Iakhihsohtha Lodge and previously worked with her sister at Bob's Motel and Akwesasne community buildings. She enjoyed hand quilting, sewing and crocheting. Family was very important to her, and she cherished spending time with her grandchildren, and making sure everyone was fed.
Nancy is survived by her husband Louis; her children, Helen Marie Jacobs, Peter and Darlene Adams, Ronald Howard Phillips and his companion Karen Oakes, and Raymond Phillips, all of Akwesasne; nine grandchildren, Angel, Kaylee, Talon, Amanda and her husband Corey, Adam, Aaron, Craig, Lauren and Stevie Ray; four great grandchildren, Avah, Coranda, Axton and Channing; and her brother Peter and Grace Mitchell of Akwesasne.
Nancy was predeceased by her mother Christie Smoke; and her step father, John Mitchell; and tragically by her twin sister and her husband, Margaret and Francis "Yogi" Lazore on May 3, 1986. Additionally, she was predeceased by her mother-in-law and father-in-law Theresa and Mitchell Phillips.
Friends may call at Homemakers beginning Wednesday at 4:00 PM until Friday morning. A Mass of Christian burial will be held Friday at 2:00 PM at the St. Regis Catholic Church, with Rev. Jerome Pastores celebrating. Burial will be held in the spring at St. Joseph's Cemetery, St. Regis.
