Salmon River Takes Buzzer-Beater Win Over H-D; Massena Girls Take Season Opener

The Salmon River Shamrocks pulled away with a one-point win thanks to a buzzer beater, and the Massena girls opened their 2018-19 season on a positive note.

The Shamrocks hosted Hermon-DeKalb at home on Friday, Nov. 30. While down 47-45, Salmon River's Dylan Beam got ahold of the ball, fired a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded, and nailed the shot to earn his squadron a one-point victory. Clayton Jones paced the team with 20 points. Cayden Sunday scored 10 points, Logan Lebehn eight, PJ Ghostlaw five, Beam three and Tony Jacobs two. For Hermon-DeKalb, Zach Denesha scored 14 points, Pat Tehonica scored 11 points, Garrett Willard 10, Jacob Coller seven and Aric Bogart five.

Two nights earlier, the Massena Raider girls opened their season with a 49-23 win over Norwood-Norfolk. They built a 25-7 halftime lead and never looked back. Aryssa Hopps paced Massena's offense with 12 points. Shaylena Mandigo scored 11 points, including going 9/12 from the free throw line. Octavia Viskovich and Nova LeGrow each scored eight points. Hayleigh Armstrong scored six points and Morgan Eddy four. Kylee Kellison led Norwood-Norfolk with seven points. Emma Schiavone, Hannah Mallette and Maisie Voss each scored three, Olivia Weegar two and Shanyn St. Andrews one.

The same night, Salmon River's girls basketball team lost 31-25 to Tupper Lake. Jillian Benedict scored eight points, Kamea Thomas and Annabelle Mitchell scored five each. Yanenowi Logan, Kahnekahawi and Meg Martin each scored two points and Jheri White netted one. Sophia Martin led Tupper Lake with 10 points.

The previous weekend on Nov. 24, the Shamrock boys picked up a Saranac tournament win over Parishville-Hopkinton by a 65-10 final score. Lebehn notched a game-high 17 points. Jones scored 12, Greg Burdash eight, Ghostlaw seven, Beam and Jacobs six points each, Lane Oakes five and Sunday four.

The Massena Raiders boys in the same tournament lost 59-56 to Saranac. Tyler Bacon scored a team-high 21 points. Alex Rusaw scored 16 points and grabbed 16 rebounds. Josh Sheet scored 16 points as well and Chris McGregor netted three. Connor Recore led Saranac with 15 points.
