The Salmon River Shamrocks varsity girls hockey team improved their 2018-19 record to 3-1 while the Massena Raider girls lost their opening two bouts.
On Tuesday, Nov. 27, the ‘Rocks claimed a 6-1 win over Saranac Lake-Lake Placid on the road. After a silent first period, Salmon River punched in the only goals they would need in the second period and then had a four-goal barrage in the closing stanza. Brycelan Sunday led the offense with a hat trick. Hannah Johnson scored twice and Myranda Collette (three assists) accounted for the other goal on a shorthanded play. Karli St. Ann had two assists. Taylor Swamp, Madison Collette, Emma Ransom and Rylie Garrow all tallied solo helpers.
Three nights later, the Salmon River girls lost by one goal to hosts Plattsburgh. Carli Cartier turned aside 22 scoring attempts. Johnson (unassisted) and Olivia Moulton, assisted by Mahkia Snyder, scored both goals in the third period. Salmon River will get another chance against Plattsburgh at their Dec. 18 home opener.
The same night, Massena lost 9-3 to Skaneateles. Skaneateles took control of the game early on with a five-goal opening frame. Hannah Chilton scored twice and Gabrielle Puente once. Meg Wilmshurst and Grayce Trimboli had one assist each. Sabella Cromie made 26 saves. Genevieve Morrow scored a game-high four goals for Skaneateles. Evie Sheridan made 12 saves.
Two nights earlier, Massena lost 8-3 to Beekmantown. The Eagles were leading 2-1 after the opening stanza and then scored four goals in just over three minutes of play in the second period. Chilton scored twice and Wilmshurst once. Lindsey LaDue and Ella Oakes each had single assists. Cromie made 16 saves. Brianne Knight made 21 saves for Beekmantown.
